The Beer Tasting
We decided to start the afternoon with a craft beer tasting of the 4 beers that they offer, at a very reasonable R10.00 per 100ml beer.
I am more a wine than a beer drinker, although I have really started enjoying craft beers. They have four beers on offer: Sandveld, Lighthouse, Cormorant (which was my absolute favourite) and Harbour.
The Lunch
The menu isn't huge, but really varied... from bar snacks to seafood to burgers to steaks to even eisbein. As we tasted the beer, the waitresses were bringing other diner's food out and everything looked so yummy that it was difficult to choose what we wanted for lunch. We started off with the snoek paté which is THE most delicious paté I've ever tasted. It is served with bokkom (a West Coast thing, kind of like dried fish) melba toast as well as the chicken liver parfait which was accompanied by fresh ciabatta.
For the main course I opted for a Moroccan spiced lamb burger (R120.00) with humus, tzatsiki and tomato cumin relish with chunky hand cut fries... oh my word.... it was absolutely amazing and was one of those dishes that you wish you could start over again.... it was THAT good!
My lunch date chose the beer battered fish & chips (R115.00) served with cottage cheese tartare and mushy peas. I tasted the fish and it was fresh and the batter was light and fluffy and super tasty.
The Service
There is a great atmosphere at Charlie's Brewery, and it was really busy at lunch-time, yet the staff were very attentive, and our waitress, Tatum, was fantastic.
The Manager, Danica, came to chat with us as well and was extremely knowledgeable and friendly.
I really enjoyed adding this experience to my food and wine blog in Cape Town, and since this review I've been back several times :)
