Maastricht Wines is situated in Durbanville, on the Durbanville Wine Route in the Western Cape.  It had only been open for a few days before we visited.  

This was the last wine farm we visited before the COVID-19 lockdown which started on 27 March 2020.

For months, as you drove past,  there was a sign saying "opening soon", therefore we were super excited that it had eventually opened it's doors and we could taste their wines and I could review it for my food and wine blog in Cape Town.

This farm is beautiful, and comes complete with a long flower-filled pathway which leads to the cellar doors.  Maastricht has been owned by the Louw family since 1982.  

They produce a selection of five different wines, with Sauvignon Blanc being the main varietal.  This is joined by a selection of reds, namely Pinotage, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

 

As it was a lovely sunny day, we decided to sit outdoors in the exquisitely manicured garden, although there are tables inside the tasting room as well. It boasts a lovely tranquil setting and the staff were really friendly as well.

There are two options for wine tasting.  The first one is to taste six wines, and the second is to taste eight.
We opted to taste all eight of their wines, which included a deliciously fresh MCC Brut Rosé  and their 2018 Wooded Chardonnay - which was absolutely incredible!  Only 1000 bottles of this was produced, and it is well priced at a modest R150.00  (€7.43 / £6.47) per bottle. 

Thys, the winemaker and member of the Louw family, hosted us and we found him to be really informative as he chatted to us about all the wines as he poured tasters into our glasses.

My experience at Maastricht was a great one and I really enjoyed reviewing it for my food and wine blog in Cape Town.  I will definitely be back for another visit, to try out their cheese and charcuterie platter as well as a bottle or two of that amazing Chardonnay :)
