Upper  Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Hermanus

Sumaridge is situated on what I feel is one of the most amazing roads in the Western Cape, the Hemel-en-Aarde Road in Hermanus.  Hemel-en-Aarde literally means Heaven and Earth, hence you will see just why it is named that when you visit this valley.  The Valley is often referred to as "Little Burgundy" due to it's reputation for producing world class cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

There are thirteen wine estates along this heavenly road, and every time we visit Hermanus we are drawn to Sumaridge.

The owners are Simon Turner and his wife Holly Bellingham, who have owned the estate since 2008.  Simon and Holly divide their time between Hermanus and England.

I was so excited to review Sumaridge for my food and wine blog in Cape Town, especially since their Rosé is named Tara! How cool is that?! (see  last pic).

In 2018 Sumaridge Estate Wines won the Lifestyle Award "Vineyard of the Year" - and you will see just why when you visit them.

The Informal Dining Room / Wine Tasting

The first thing I notice whenever we visit Sumaridge is the peacefulness and tranquility that you feel when you are there.

First of all they have beautiful gardens and a huge dam, and it is prettiness personified, and furthermore, in summer they offer picnics beside the dam.

Sumaridge offer three ranges of wine, the Single Varietals, their Flagship Blends as well as Lifestyle Blends.

The Single Varietals include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Wayfarer Syrah and Pinotage.
Their Flagship Blends are the Maritimus and Epitome.
The Lifestyle Blends are Bushell, Tara (the Rosé) and Klip Kop.

Their wines are divine, and the staff are super friendly and accommodating.

The Experience

We enjoyed a delicious lunch platter overloaded with cheese, charcuterie and freshly baked farm bread paired with their award winning wines.

It was a chilly winter's day so they had a cosy fire burning.  The experience was lovely and intimate, and very relaxing looking over the dam.
The owners have also transformed a former farm cottage into a gorgeous, secluded, five-room Lodge.

I really enjoyed reviewing Sumaridge for my food and wine blog in Cape Town, and would highly recommend that you visit the estate when you are next in Hermanus.
