Glen Carlou Wine Estate

Klapmuts - Simondium Rd, Simondium, Paarl

THE ESTATEYou will find Glen Carlou a mere 15 minutes from Stellenbosch, and only a 35 minute drive from Cape Town.

This was my first visit to this wine estate, and it was one of those "quick pop-in's" on the way to lunch at another wine farm.  It is absolutely gorgeous.  Not only do you get to taste some amazing wines, but they do a liquorice and wine pairing, have a beautiful restaurant as well as an art gallery on the property.  It even offers a stunning wedding venue as well.

I was really excited to indulge in the liquorice and wine pairing at Glen Carlou for my food and wine blog in and around Cape Town.

THE PAIRING
My friend and I decided not to just do the traditional wine tasting, but to try the unique wine and liquorice pairing.  I've done many pairings including biltong, chocolate, nougat, ice cream, to name a few, but this was my first liquorice one.

The liquorice they use is Lakrids by Bülow, which is Danish,  and oh my word was it delicious?!!

First up was the Pinot Noir Rosé paired with red liquorice.
Next was their 2018 Syrah which was beautifully paired with the coffee liquorice.
Thirdly we had the Petite Classique with salt & caramel liquorice, which was exquisite.
Lastly was the 2017 Natural Sweet Chenin Blanc (which was really interesting) expertly paired with passion fruit liquorice.

Each one of the pairings was mouthwateringly delicious and made my taste buds sing!

We then went on to taste more of their wines, with my favorites being  the Gravel Quarry Cabernet Sauvignon and the Quartz Stone Chardonnay.  They were both absolutely incredible!

Needless to say I left with a case of some of the most incredible wines.  We would have loved to have changed our lunch plans and stayed at Glen Carlou for lunch, as everything we saw come out of the kitchen looked phenomenol.  Unfortunately the restaurant was fully booked, and as it was winter time and raining pretty heavily, the deck which hosted the most spectacular views wasn't being used.  I will however definitely be back for lunch on the deck once the warmer weather sets in.

THE EXPERIENCEIt is most definitely worth a visit to Glen Carlou, and it won't be my last time. (I would recommend that you make a reservation for lunch as they are extremely popular)  In conclusion, I loved everything about this experience as well as reviewing it  for my food and wine blog in Cape Town.
