Lemberg Wine Estate

R44 - 4km west of Tulbagh

Lemberg Wine Estate is situated in the heart of the Tulbagh Valley.

Tulbagh is under two hour's drive from Cape Town.  It is one of the prettiest little Towns in the Western Cape that I have ever been to.  I was very excited to visit this particular Wine Estate for my food and wine blog in Cape Town because I frequently drink their wines, but have never been to the Estate before.

Lemberg also offers guest cottages for rental should you wish to overnight there.

This Wine Estate was established as far back as 1978, and the current owners are Henk and Suzette. They have owned Lemberg since 2001.

The Wine Estate

Lemberg's cultivars include Pinot Noir, Pinotage, Shiraz, Grenache Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Harsevelu (which is a Hungarian grape variety).

The Estate is very casual and unpretentious, therefore once you walk in the door, you immediately feel at home.  We received such a warm welcome from Carmen and Riaan as well as a couple of gorgeous bulldogs.

We later learned that some of the wines are named after the dogs.  The Blanc de Noir is named after Rosie, and there is the 2018 Lady and the Nelson 2014 Syrah.

The Wine Tasting

Our wine tasting started with the whites.

The 2019 Sauvignon Blanc was first on the menu.  It is noteworthy that it had a fresh tropical nose with passion fruit and delighful white stone fruit aromas.

Next up was Rosie, which is their Blanc de Noir (100% Pinot Noir).  It had crushed red berry notes on the nose followed by strawberry and was absolutely delicious.  Rosie is so reasonably priced at R70.00 a bottle.

We went on to taste the 100% Harslevelu (as I mentioned, this is a Hungarian grape).  This is priced at R200.00 a bottle and every sip was sublime, and well worth the price.

The reds were next, and we tasted both the 2014 Pinotage as well as the 2014 Spencer Pinotage (priced at R70.00 and R250.00 respectively).  Both of the Pinotages were exquisite.

The star of the show for me was the 2014 Nelson.  Oh my word!  It was mind-blowinginly amazing, and as a result of it being 100% Syrah, it has aromas of blackberries, mixed herbs and just a hint of aniseed.

The Experience

Lemberg Wine Estate is certainly most definitely worth a visit.

From the huge, cosy log fire, to Carmen and Riaan's friendliness and helpfulness, to their fantastic wines, I would recommend Lemberg to be added to your bucket list of Wine Estates to visit.

In conclusion, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Lemberg, and as a food and wine blogger in Cape Town it was a real pleasure to experience such great hospitality in the beautiful and historic town of Tulbagh.

I will definitely be back on my next trip to Tulbagh :)
